Ford has been making American cars for over 100 years, and throughout their enduring history, it’s hinted at some fascinating concept cars in addition to its official releases. Featuring some exciting off-the-wall features and other design elements that seem more achievable, Ford’s concept cars let drivers imagine different ways to experience their daily drive. Here are some of the most interesting Ford concept cars that have been rumored over the years.

Ford Gyron

At the 1961 Detroit Motor Show, Ford unveiled the Gyron, a futuristic concept car on two wheels. Balanced on one front wheel and one back wheel, the Gyron used gyroscopes to stabilize and propel the vehicle’s super-sleek, tapered body. The Gyron featured a bubble-style roof that popped up completely to allow drivers to climb into the car, forgoing the need for doors entirely. One of the main designers for the Gyron worked with the military on flying saucer concepts, so it’s no surprise that the Gyron looks a lot like a spaceship.

Magic Cruiser

The ’60s were a great time for concept cars, as evidenced by the 1966 Magic Cruiser, a fastback-style car that converts into a two-door station wagon with the touch of a button. A hydraulic system powered the exterior transformation, and the back seats folded up and down easily for extra cargo space. The bumper could also fold down so that passengers could simply climb in the back for access to the third seat. The Magic Cruiser ultimately had too many safety concerns to be put into production, but the idea of having a car that transitioned between segments brought a new perspective to automaking.

Model U

Ford introduced the Model U in 2003 as a callback to the groundbreaking Model T that made cars accessible to the general public. The most unique aspect of the Model U was its fully customizable interior, designed to help the Model U to adapt to changing innovations and move with the driver’s lifestyle. The car was outfitted with different slots that the driver could rearrange and reconfigure, updating and replacing old parts with new upgrades and personalized features. The Model U also featured a hybrid engine, adding to its theme of sustainability and practicality.

Mustang Giugiaro

There are dozens of Mustang concepts that never made it to the general public, but the 2006 Mustang Giugiaro stands out from the rest with its chic and imaginative design. This sporty interpretation of the Ford classic keeps the Mustang’s recognizable silhouette but adds on dynamic features like a single pane windshield that soars all the way over the car’s roof. The Mustang Giugiaro also included ambitious technology concepts, like replacing the rear- and side-view mirrors with interior reverse cameras. It also added a touch of style with touch-activated doors that open from the top, similar to scissor doors.

While these concept Fords never saw the light of day, there are plenty of innovative designs that made it to market. Browse our extensive inventory of new Ford cars and trucks to start researching your dream car, or drop by the dealership to take one of our top models for a test drive today.
