When Ford released the Mustang in the U.S. market in 1964, buyers were immediately mesmerized by its impressive features. Over the years, the pony car has continued to lead the way when it comes to performance, styling, and overall appeal.
Impressive History
The original Mustang debuted in mid-April, coming in at a price of $2,368. It was incredibly popular from the moment it arrived on dealership lots, with would-be buyers bidding against one another on available models as soon as they arrived on dealership lots.
When Ford initially released the vehicle, the company estimated that it would sell about 100,000 total. However, when 22,000 models sold on the first day it came out, the Mustang became an immediate icon. In the Indianapolis 500 in 1964, the Mustang served as the pace car, cementing its status as a very successful sports car. In one year, Ford recorded over 400,000 sales.
Eye-Catching Styling
The first model showcased an elongated hood and flashy wheels, along with the horse prancing across the front grille. Although the exterior features have changed over the years, the Mustang remains one of the most visually appealing vehicles on the road. It’s been featured in a number of films, including “Goldfinger,” a James Bond film, and “Bullitt,” a film where actor Steve McQueen sat behind the wheel of a fastback model and participated in a number of chase scenes.
You’ll also spot versions with bold racing stripes down the hood, larger wheels, and other unique styling elements. The 2020 model is available with elements like an active exhaust, oversized brakes with four-piston calipers, and a large rear spoiler.
Power and Performance
When you’re shopping in the sports car segment, power and performance are some of the key elements you’re likely considering. In these areas, the Mustang doesn’t disappoint. The original model from 1964 featured a 2.8-liter V-6 engine, while available options included 4.3-liter and 4.7-liter V-8 units. In order to get the more powerful V-8, you had to add the GT Equipment package, which also included a unique instrument panel. Whether drivers were cruising around town in the first Mustang or heading around the racetrack, the performance of this model was downright impressive.
The 2020 Mustang delivers even more impressive power. The standard engine is a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that pumps out 350 pound-feet of torque and 310 horsepower. It pairs with a six-speed manual transmission as standard, while a 10-speed automatic is available as an option. However, the four-cylinder isn’t the only option. You can upgrade to one of the GT trim levels to get a 5.0-liter V-8 engine that produces 420 pound-feet of torque and 460 horsepower or the BULLITT model to get the same engine specially tuned to make 480 horsepower.
